SUMMARY:Portraits of Deep Time by Tara Kraft with Kirkland Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Rocks ooze time and change. When I look at rocks\, I imagine the eons of geologic movement that created them. It is a huge expanse of time that dwarfs our tiny existence. To lovingly study rocks connects me to the natural world in its immensity\, but also in its particulars. It brings life into perspective. It places humanity into a larger\, epochal scale of time\, one we must consider more as we face the consequences of our impact on the planet. \nI meet rocks while hiking\, and there are few hikes as iconic and well-known as the Snow Lake Trail. It is not unusual to pass a hundred hikers on a weekend trip. The dramatic views of Snoqualmie Pass and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness are stunning\, but I’ve chosen not to paint a grand view of the landscape. Though I love the landscape\, I am uncomfortable with the associations that view has with conquest and consumption\, from so-called manifest destiny to glossy social media. Instead I focus on small pieces of the trail\, small pieces that contain whole worlds\, to encourage consideration and contemplation. \nI think of my painting process as geology in fast-forward. I build up layers\, scraping texture back\, allowing my materials to express their unique physical properties. I enjoy the endlessly alluring play of paint that creates unexpected and powerful moments.

SUMMARY:Kirkland Public Library with Suze Woolf
DESCRIPTION:You may recognize Suze as the People’s Choice Award Winner from our past exhibition\, Threshold.\n\nSuze Woolf is a life-long outdoor person. Her art work is primarily about nature\, and she creates much of it in the field. She has watched glaciers shrink and burned-over forests increase all over the North American West. At first\, as a landscape painter\, she began painting whole intact scenes\, but soon was compelled to portray their ecological disturbances. Then\, close-up studies of individual trees became a metaphor for human impact: our human predilection for cooking the planet.\n\nYet for all her fear and grief\, she also sees unusual beauty. Wildfire fighters call fire-carved standing snags “totems:” all the same – carbonized\, eaten away; yet each different – the fire’s physics and the tree’s biological structure create unique sculptures. Each ridge and fissure becomes a landscape unto itself. Char remains iridescent for up to a decade\, reflecting local light and color.\n\nShe has worked to confront anxiety about climate crisis in a variety of media\, from painting\, paper casting\, and pyrographic drawings to artist books. Like most of her best work\, the results are both beautiful and disturbing.\n\nThis work is expected to remain on display through November.\n\nLibrary Address: 308 Kirkland Avenue\, Kirkland\, WA 98033\n\nDetails:\nMeet Suze Woolf and hear her talk about her exhibit at the Kirkland Library. She will be joined in conversation with Dr. David L. Peterson\, Affiliate Professor\, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington and Lorena Williams\, former wildland firefighter and author. This event will take place on Tuesday\, October 19 at 6:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Home Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:The Kirkland Arts Center is happy to present\, KAC teaching artist\, Maja Sereda’s drawings of the natural world at the Kirkland Public Library. \nMore Information about Maja Sereda\nAbout the Artist\n\nMaja Sereda renders detailed mixed media drawings on paper. Her fascination with details germinated in childhood and continue to this day. Sereda’s current body of work is a reflection of her personal relationship with nature\, her creative process and her philosophy. The drawings are “collectives” of eyes\, plants\, animals\, bugs and more\, living individually as well as together\, creating a tightly knit fabric of our environment/our home. Home Reimagined looks closely at Pacific Northwest birds and their homes\, and how humans are making an impact on that delicate structure. \n\nAll artwork displayed at the Kirkland Public Library Satellite Exhibition is for sale as marked by the Kirkland Arts Center.
